Why Naxos might be the best Greek Island you've never considered

When most people start planning a Greek island trip, they usually look at well-known destinations like Santorini or Mykonos first. But ask anyone who's spent time island hopping through the Cyclades and you'll often hear the same answer: Naxos.

As the largest island in the Cyclades, Naxos offers a little bit of everything: long sandy beaches, traditional villages, mountain landscapes, excellent food, and a more authentic atmosphere than many of its neighbours.

It's the kind of place where you can spend the morning wandering through a marble-paved mountain village, the afternoon swimming in crystal-clear water, and the evening enjoying a meal made with ingredients produced just a few kilometres away. Beyond its beautiful scenery and ancient history, Naxos is also a destination rich in food and wine culture, offering visitors the chance to discover local wineries, immersive food experiences, and hidden gems that showcase the island's traditions.

How to reach Naxos

Located in the heart of the Cyclades, Naxos is perfectly positioned for island hopping. It sits close to Paros and the Small Cyclades and is well connected to both neighbouring islands and Athens.

You can reach Naxos by ferry from Athens in around 3–5 hours, with multiple departures each day, or by a short domestic flight of approximately 40 minutes.

Many travellers also choose to fly into nearby international airports such as Mykonos or Santorini before continuing to Naxos by ferry, making it an easy addition to a wider Greece itinerary.

Why Naxos feels different

What makes Naxos stand out is its balance. Unlike some of the Cyclades' more famous islands, Naxos has managed to preserve its local character.

The island is one of the most fertile in Greece and has a strong agricultural tradition that shapes daily life and its food culture. Local specialties include graviera cheese, potatoes, olive oil, citrus products, and kitron liqueur. Here, food isn't simply something you enjoy between sightseeing stops, it's also part of the island's identity.

Combined with beautiful beaches, traditional villages, and a slower pace of life, Naxos offers the kind of Greek island experience that many travellers are looking for but often struggle to find.

Taste Naxos: Wine & Food Experiences

One of the best ways to experience Naxos is through its food and wine, and below are my two favourite ways to do so!

Tranampelo Odd Blend

Tranampelo Winery

Naxos has a long history of winemaking, and Tranampelo Winery offers a wonderful introduction to the island's growing wine scene. The winery focuses on organic farming and minimal intervention, producing wines that express the character of Naxos and its grape varieties.

Their collection includes two wines called Odd Blend (one white and one red) which combine both white and red varieties, including Fokiano, Mandilaria, Aidani, Mavrotragano, and Monemvasia. They also produce a single-variety wine made from Potamisi.

Visitors can enjoy guided tastings to learn more about the island's winemaking traditions or join one of the winery's special summer dining events among the vines.

Philema Food Tours

For travellers wanting a deeper connection with local culture, a food tour is one of the most rewarding experiences on the island.

That's why we've partnered with Philema Food Tours, whose small-group experiences showcase Naxos through its flavours and traditions. Their tours include visits to local producers, markets, tavernas, cheese makers, and olive oil producers, offering opportunities to meet the people behind the island's food culture.

Depending on the season, you may also take part in cooking demonstrations and discover ingredients that have shaped Naxian cuisine for generations.

It's a fantastic way to go beyond the main sights, connect with locals, and gain a deeper appreciation for the traditions and stories that make Naxos unique. Use code MGI10 for 10% off selected tours.

Beyond the beaches

Of course, no trip to Naxos would be complete without spending time on its beaches. Agios Prokopios, Agia Anna, and Plaka are among the finest in the Cyclades, while quieter spots such as Alyko offer a more secluded experience.

But some of the island's greatest treasures lie inland. Explore the winding streets of Naxos Town and its Venetian Kastro, visit the mountain village of Apeiranthos, or discover ancient sites such as the Temple of Demeter. For more active travellers, the hike to Mount Zas (the highest peak in the Cyclades) rewards you with spectacular views across the Aegean.

Planning Your Trip to Naxos

Whether you're visiting Greece for the first time or returning to discover another side of the Cyclades, Naxos is an island that consistently exceeds expectations. Because while Naxos is a fantastic place to start, especially for first time visitors, it often becomes the island that inspires travellers to explore even more of Greece.
